Philadelphia Eagles officially cut roster down to 53 players

The Philadelphia Eagles sent 22 players packing Saturday.

Saturday was national cut day for all 32 teams in the NFL, including the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles cut a total of 21 players and traded a 22nd, Sam Bradford, to the Minnesota Vikings.

None of these cuts come as much of a surprise in exception to Najee Goode‘s release. Goode didn’t necessarily stand out this preseason, but he’s showed potential in the past as a solid option as a backup linebacker who can play any linebacker position. It was originally believed that his versatility in the linebacker corps would ultimately earn him a spot on the 53-man roster, but that obviously wasn’t enough.

It should also be noted that Cody Parkey, the Eagles’ Pro Bowl kicker from 2014, was also cut. Parkey suffered a season-ending groin injury in 2015 and it appears Parkey still hasn’t fully recovered from the ailment.

The biggest surprise, however, was certainly the trade that sent Bradford to the Vikings. There was no chatter regarding possible trade talks between the two teams. Roseman clearly wanted to keep things quiet. This transaction significantly alters the course of both the Vikings and Eagles for the immediate future. With Teddy Bridgewater out for the season, Bradford will now be the Vikings’ starting signal caller. For the Eagles, Bradford’s departure means the Carson Wentz era has officially begun in the City of Brotherly Love.
