Pats approach Ochocinco about contract

Published Feb. 29, 2012 12:00 a.m. ET

The New England Patriots have approached Chad Ochocinco about restructuring his contract, the Sports Business Journal reported Wednesday.

Ochocinco, 34, is coming off his worst season to date despite the team's journey to the Super Bowl, which ended in a 21-17 defeat to the New York Giants.

The wide receiver, who headed to New England in 2011 after a decade with the Cincinnati Bengals, claimed only 15 receptions for 276 yards, along with a solitary touchdown.

The Pats want to re-examine their commitment to paying him a base salary of $3 million in 2012 and 2013, though details on their proposals for his revised earnings were unknown.
