Patriots Place Freeny, Scruggs on Injured Reserve

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Patriots announced Saturday they have placed LB Jonathan Freeny and TE Greg Scruggs on injured reserve.

New England opened two roster spots by placing Freeny and Scruggs on injured reserve, which the team quickly filled by signing DL Geneo Grissom and DL Anthony Johnson to the 53-man roster.

Freeny and Scruggs had already been ruled out for this Sunday’s home tilt against the Cincinnati Bengals.

More on the practice squad call-ups:

After signing a contract extension in August, Freeny had played in all five regular season games so far this year, starting in four of them.

Dealing with a lingering knee injury, Scruggs hasn’t seen the field all year for a Patriots team that’s already deep at the tight end position. Trailing Rob Gronkowski, Martellus Bennett, and A.J. Derby on the depth chart.

Linebacker Elandon Roberts will likely see expanded playing time in Freeny’s absence.

The Patriots may re-activate one of the two players after eight weeks, with the most likely choice being Freeny if he’s able to go.
