Panthers Re-Sign LB Ben Jacobs

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 1:43 p.m. ET

The Carolina Panthers have kicked off their offseason by re-signing one of their own in linebacker and special teamer Ben Jacobs.

The Panthers made one of their first moves of this offseason on Wednesday morning by re-signing linebacker and special teams ace Ben Jacobs.

Jacobs was one of the team’s restricted free agents and comes back to Carolina on a two-year deal after rejoining the Panthers with four games to go in the 2016 season.

Before the season began, the linebacker was waived with an injury settlement but as injuries piled up, the front office brought back a familiar face to help fill the voids.

Bryan Strickland of Panthers.com spoke to Jacobs who was happy to remain with the organization:

“I spent 13 weeks at home watching games on the couch and not knowing if I’d ever get the chance to play again. So when I got that call, I wanted to take full advantage,” Jacobs said. “I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to stay with this organization because I love this place. I love these guys and this coaching staff. It feels like home to me.”

Jacob’s has been a consistent fixture on Carolina’s special teams units for the past few years. He played in every game during the 2014 and 2015 seasons and recorded 24 total tackles with 17 of those being strictly while in special teams coverage.

The four-year veteran will re-join arguably the most stacked position on the Panthers roster. Currently, the team has eight total linebackers on the roster with just one, primary backup A.J. Klein, set to become a free agent.

Jacobs will likely continue to compete with youngsters like David Mayo, Jeremy Cash and Jared Norris for special teams reps in 2017. But with a newly inked deal, he appears to have at least a slight leg up on the others.
