Panthers lose S Martin for season to knee injury

Published Dec. 3, 2012 2:27 p.m. ET

The Panthers have placed backup safety Sherrod Martin on injured reserve after he injured the ACL and MCL in his right knee in Carolina's 27-21 loss to the Kansas City on Sunday.

He becomes the 12th Carolina player to be placed on injured reserve this season.

Martin, a four-year veteran, was a two-year starter for the Panthers before losing his starting job to free agent pickup Haruki Nakamura in training camp. Martin played in 12 games in a reserve role and finished the season with 23 tackles and one forced fumble.

Coach Ron Rivera says the Panthers have not yet made a corresponding roster move to replace Martin.
