NFL halts photo sales of penalized hits

Published Oct. 20, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

The NFL will cease sales of photos of two big hits from Sunday's games that the league issued fines for last weekend.

The league made the announcement Wednesday after reports that ReplayPhotos.com was selling images of hits by Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison and New England Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather. Harrison was fined $75,000 and Meriweather $50,000 as the league stepped up enforcement of rules against flagrant hits.

The league links to the photo vendor from its NFL.com website. The pictures are sold for prices ranging from $15.95 for a 6-by-8 print to $249.95 for a 15-by-20 image displayed on canvas.

"Those photos will be removed ASAP & we will ensure no photos of illegal plays are available again," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote in his Twitter account.

Aiello said the vendor uses an automated process to post photos for sale to fans and that the process will be changed.
