Nelson Agholor is very bad at football

Nelson Agholor. He is bad at the game of football.

This may come as a bit of a shock to you, but Nelson Agholor, the Philadelphia Eagles‘ first round pick from the 2015 NFL Draft, has been kind of disappointing. And when I say “kind of,” I really mean massively disappointing. Through his first two years in the NFL, Agholor has done close to nothing to make himself worth the 20th overall selection in the draft.

One of Agholor’s worst performances this season (and there’s a lot of them!) came against the Atlanta Falcons Sunday. Agholor was targeted only four times, resulting in two receptions for a grand total of seven yards, one drop and another incompletion.

Pro Football Focus ranked Agholor as the seventh worst player in the NFL following his dreadful performance against Atlanta.

Agholor was on the field for 71 snaps against the Falcons and was only targeted four times. That would be bad enough, except from those four targets he could manage just two catches for seven yards, and one of them required a pointless challenge to secure as he bobbled a pass going to ground at the sideline. That turned 2nd-and-20 into 2nd-and-16, but cost the Eagles a challenge where a clean catch would have spared it. Agholor also dropped another of the targets and was effectively a drag on the entire Eagles’ offense in Philadelphia’s close win.

As bad as Agholor has been this season, his second year in the NFL is actually a major improvement from his abysmal rookie season, as he is on pace to nearly double his production as a first-year pro (he only recorded 23 receptions for 283 yards and one touchdown, so don’t get too excited).

While that’s still not an impressive stat line, it is, at the very least, an improvement and he’ll need to continue getting better down the home stretch of the season. If not, his job is very much in danger.
