MRI shows sprained knee for RG3

Robert Griffin III escaped serious knee damage as an MRI conducted after Sunday's 31-28 overtime victory over the Baltimore Ravens showed the Washington Redskins’ rookie quarterback suffered a sprain, team spokesman Tony Wyllie announced.

At about the same time as Wyllie's announcement, Griffin tweeted: ''Your positive vibes and prayers worked people!!!! To God be the Glory!''

By medical definition, a sprained knee means that Griffin has some damage in at least one of the several ligaments in his knee. Wyllie said coach Mike Shanahan will give more information about Griffin's status Monday.

Griffin's right leg snapped back as he was hit by Ravens lineman Haloti Ngata with 1:56 left in regulation. He limped off the field and was replaced by Kirk Cousins, although Griffin returned for four plays before he limped off again.

''I knew as soon as I got hit. I screamed. Like a man, of course,'' Griffin added with a laugh. ''It hurt really bad.''

No timetable was given on when Griffin might return. Griffin tore the ACL in the same knee in the third game of the 2009 season while at Baylor.

"It didn't feel like an ACL or anything like that," said Griffin, who appeared upbeat as he spoke to reporters after the game and before the MRI was performed.

''I'm not a doctor, but I know what an ACL feels like — and it doesn't feel like an ACL.''

Griffin, who was in a full knee brace, slowly made his way to the locker room as Cousins completed the comeback with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Pierre Garcon and ran up the middle for the two-point conversion with 29 seconds left in regulation.

''I knew I needed to get out at that point,'' Griffin said. ''I couldn't move. At some point, you have to do what's right for the team. And if I'm playing the rest of that game, I probably would have hurt myself even more.''

The Redskins won the game on a 34-yard Kai Forbath field goal, a kick set up on a 56-yard punt return by Richard Crawford.

"It's sore right now," Shanahan said after the game. "He wanted to go back in the game, which is a good sign."
