Mom miffed over F-bombs by Jets coach

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan called his mom Doris Ryan to apologize for his televised, profanity-laced tirade that aired during HBO's "Hard Knocks" premiere -- and she responded by taking him to task, the New York Post reported Friday.

The opening of the show, which featured an inside look at the football team's training camp, showed Rex Ryan, 47, dropping F-bombs.

"He knew I would be upset," said Doris Ryan, 75. "The fact that he called me -- he knew in his heart that I was not happy with it. That was not Rex. That was not the Rex that I know. I have never, ever, ever heard him say words like that. It was kind of shocking to me. He told me he didn't mean to curse that much. The occasional F-word I can live with, but that was a little bit too much ... I was really looking forward to seeing the show, but the first five minutes were kind of rough."

She added: "Maybe he was trying to come off macho. Maybe he was nervous or a little frustrated with the [Darrelle] Revis situation," referring to the Jets' star cornerback who has been locked in a bitter contract feud with the team.

Doris Ryan said that even the coach's father, Buddy Ryan, who has been known to curse -- and drew national attention when he punched fellow Houston Oilers football assistant coach Kevin Gilbride in the face on the sideline during a 1994 game -- was taken aback by his son's rants.

"Buddy called me and said he was upset, too," she said. "It was so unlike Rex -- that's what shook us up. But I don't think we'll see that again. I'm looking forward to seeing next week's show, and we'll see the real Rex."
