McCarthy: Packers WR Montgomery (ankle) 'hasn't made much progress'
The Green Bay Packers need help at wide receiver, and they're not likely to get it any time soon from Ty Montgomery. Head coach Mike McCarthy said the rookie receiver "hasn't made much progress" in his recovery from an ankle injury that has sidelined since mid-October, according to ESPN's Rob Demovsky.
Montgomery is an athletic wideout who caught passes, took handoffs and returned kicks for the first six games of the season (all wins), totaling 368 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns on 25 touches. The Packers have lost four of the five games since Montgomery's injury, as the rest of the team's receivers have mostly failed to make a difference in his absence.
Right now, the Packers are relying on second-year pro Davante Adams and 31-year-old James Jones to be the offensive playmakers on the outside. They are not getting the job done, leaving Randle Cobb to toil in the slot. Cobb hasn't been helping his case with a few big drops this season.
Given the state of Green Bay's receiving corps, the Packers better hope Montgomery turns a corner in his recovery soon.
