Lance Moore backs struggling Matthew Stafford: 'He's our guy'
The Detroit Lions are on the search for a scapegoat after their 0-5 start to the 2015 season.
Last Sunday, after throwing three interceptions in a 42-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, quarterback Matthew Stafford was benched. Perhaps his performance has been to blame for the Lions' tremendous struggles this season.
Wide receiver Lance Moore, who scored his first touchdown with the Lions in Week 5, says that's not the case.
Moore has Stafford's back, per ESPN's Michael Rothstein:
He’s our guy. There’s not a quarterback controversy by any means. That’s our guy. He’s going to be our guy. We’re going to ride with him and we’ve got to do it together. It’s not just him. He had a tough day. We all had a tough day, though.
Obviously, the quarterback is the guy that’s at the front tier of everything, so it’s going to look bad and the quarterback gets pulled, it obviously looks bad and it’s embarrassing. But he’s our guy. We’re going to rally around him. We need to do better around him to make his job easier. And we can. That’s got to be our goal this week, we all play better and in turn he’ll play better as well.
Stafford's numbers haven't been stunning this season. He's averaging 6.2 yards per pass attempt and has thrown only six touchdowns compared to eight interceptions. The quarterback's performance has little to do with the team's poor blocking and total lack of a running game (49.0 yards per game), though.
The Lions can continue to point the finger at Stafford, but they need to see improvement in more places than just the passing game.
