Jets waive former first-round pick Vernon Gholston

The New York Jets have waived former first-round pick Vernon Gholston after three disappointing seasons.

The defensive end was the sixth pick of the 2008 draft out of Ohio State. He made just five starts and didn't record a sack in 45 regular-season games. Gholston didn't play in any of the Jets' playoff games last season.

The Jets also said Wednesday they had released backup tight end Ben Hartsock
