Jets Uninterested in Covering Dwayne Allen, Colts TE Scores Twice (Video)

The New York Jets seemed to have better things to do besides covering Indianapolis Colts tight end Dwayne Allen in the red zone.

What the New York Jets have done in the 2016 NFL season has been downright offensive to football at times. There was always the chance that Ryan Fitzpatrick and the offense would struggle and they have, mightily. However, the strength of this team coming into the year was their defense—or at least that was supposed to be the case.

Instead, they’re doing things by making Indianapolis Colts tight end Dwayne Allen look like he has a forcefield around him when trying to cover him.

Matched up with Indy at MetLife Stadium on Monday night, the Jets let Andrew Luck and company drive down the field after the Colts got the ball after forcing a three-and-out. Once deep in the red zone, Allen ran a simple out route off of the line. No one on the Jets bothered to cover the tight end, who walked into the end zone for the opening six:

That’s okay, though; every team blows a coverage sometimes, even if this was in a bad spot. Just go out and redeem yourself the next time out.

Rather than redeem themselves, though, the Jets went back out on defense (after another three-and-out) and allowed the exact same thing to happen. A bit further out, Allen released to the right on what looked like a corner route and was again uncovered as he made the catch and trotted into the end zone:

You’re 2016 New York Jets, everybody.

This team has been abysmal on defense all season, but this is a particularly egregious example. How are you going to let the same player be that wide-open down near the goal line on consecutive drives? That’s unforgivable, but a rightful indication of how bad this team is. They have some serious work to do this offseason.
