Jets' Ryan Fitzpatrick feels comfortable in OC Chan Gailey's system
New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was thrust into the starting role when Geno Smith was knocked out for six to 10 weeks with a broken jaw.
It's a position Fitzpatrick is familiar with being a journeyman in the NFL, playing for five teams in his career. That alone, will help him make the transition from backup to starter for the Jets. Regardless, he's ready to step in after the incident.
"It was an unfortunate situation, something that I can’t look backward at," Fitzpatrick said via SportsNet. "I have to look forward and do the best I can to get on the same page as quickly as possible."
Along with being an 11th-year veteran, Fitzpatrick is confident in his ability to thrive in offensive coordinator Chan Gailey's system.
"There’s a lot of comfort for me being in Chan’s system," Fitzpatrick said. "There’s also a lot I’ll continue to get better at in terms of game situations and being a smart quarterback."
Fitzpatrick isn't the only one confident in his play. Head coach Todd Bowles is, as well. He's seen Fitzpatrick throughout training camp and understands his talent.
"It’s hard to replace a guy when both guys are doing well," Bowles said. "You [can’t be] wishy-washy, but Ryan’s been a pro. He’s been there before."
