Jags' Bowanko ready for center battle
Luke Bowanko started 14 games at center for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. But with a new season, comes new competition, this time in the former of veteran lineman Stefen Wisniewski.
As Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times-Union notes, Bowanko acquitted himself well as rookie, picking up just four penalties in 922 snaps. However, Wisniewski played under current Jacksonville offensive coordinator Greg Olson with the Oakland Raiders. The Jaguars signed Wisniewski to a one-year deal in April.
So who figures to start in 2015?
“I try not to think about that,” Bowanko said, according to O'Halloran. “If I’m the best I can be and that’s the best player for the Jags, then I’ll be out there.”
One advantage Bowanko currently holds is that he's healthy. Wisniewski is being held out of OTAs as he recovers from shoulder surgery.
“I need to make these (practices) count,” Bowanko said. “(Wisniewski) is a very good player, a player that is confident and comfortable in this system. He’s helped me and everybody out with grasping this offense."
