Injuries piling up for Cardinals

Published Dec. 7, 2014 10:28 p.m. ET

The injury woes for the Arizona Cardinals kept getting worse Sunday.

Running back Andre Ellington has a hernia and will be placed on injured reserve. The Cardinals' leading rusher has been bothered by a left foot injury most of the season and suffered a hip pointer against Atlanta last week.

This week, team doctors discovered a hernia and Ellington is scheduled to fly to Philadelphia on Monday to have surgery. Arizona coach Bruce Arians said he will be placed on IR.

Also, cornerback Antonio Cromartie suffered a left leg injury against the Kansas City Chiefs. Cromartie was injured early in the fourth quarter when he slipped while trying to tackle Chiefs receiver Albert Wilson.

The Cardinals originally thought Cromartie suffered an Achilles tendon injury, but Arians said the tendon was stable after the game and he would undergo more tests.

Arizona has gone through a string of injuries this season, including safety Tyrann Mathieu, who didn't play against Kansas City because of a thumb injury suffered last week against Atlanta.

Tennessee Titans quarterback Zach Mettenberger finished a second straight game sidelined by a sprained right shoulder, and he'll spend Monday the same way he did a week ago: with another MRI.

Mettenberger started against the New York Giants despite spraining his throwing shoulder a week ago in a loss at Houston. He reinjured his shoulder when sacked by linebacker Devon Kennard for the second time. Mettenberger stayed down for a few minutes before heading to the sideline and then the locker room.

Titans cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson also dislocated a shoulder in the first quarter. Right tackle Byron Stingily hurt an ankle, tried to come back and couldn't.

Washington quarterback Colt McCoy sprained his neck with two minutes remaining in the Redskins' 24-0 loss to St. Louis. Redskins running back Roy Helu Jr. left with a toe injury and never returned.

Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson left the game against Jacksonville because of a concussion. Johnson left early in the second quarter after being hit in the head by Jaguars linebacker Telvin Smith. Johnson dropped the ball and lost his helmet on the play. Teammates rushed to his side and motioned for trainers. Johnson sat up a few minutes later and eventually walked off the field under his own power.

Indianapolis Colts starting right guard Joe Reitz was carted off the field with an injured ankle in the second half against the Browns.

Reitz started in place of injured guard Hugh Thornton (knee). Reitz was hurt on a running play in the third quarter and was taken to the locker room for further evaluation and X-rays. Reitz was the second Colts lineman to go down. Earlier, rookie center Jonotthan Harrison left with a neck injury and didn't return.
