Houston Texans move to 5-3 with win over Detroit Lions

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

After enduring a week full of insults, Houston Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler was able to lead his team to a 20-13 win at home against the Detroit Lions

It wasn’t pretty the whole time, but the Houston Texans did enough to win 20-14 and get to 5-3 on the season while staying in first place. After taking a 14-0 lead over the Detroit Lions in the second quarter, things started to get close.

Houston was able to avoid an implosion and knock in a couple second half field goals to hold off Detroit who now sits at 4-4.

Quarterback Brock Osweiler was on the receiving end of some pretty brutal jokes after looking out of sync all night on Monday Night Football against his former team, the Denver Broncos. His day against Detroit was better, but not outstanding.

Osweiler was 20-of-29 passing for just 186 yards with one touchdown and one interception. It was the seventh time in eight games that Osweiler threw a pick in a game. Turnovers have been a huge issue for he and the Texans, but they still somehow have stayed undefeated at home this season.

Running back Lamar Miller played through a shoulder injury and managed 56 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Kicker Nick Novak hit both of his field goals on the day, one from 33-yards and one from 36.

Defensive stars for the Texans included linebacker John Simon, who recorded eight tackles and defensive end Jadeveon Clowney who had three tackles and a quarterback sack.

Houston now heads into their bye week which will give them time to figure out how to win some games on the road. Their next two games will be away from NRG Stadium, so it makes this time to get everyone on the same page incredibly important.

Their final eight games will include five road contests.
