It was said best by Houston Texans guard Jeff Allen. He called Saturday one of the worst days of the year.

He was of course referring to the day when teams have to get their rosters down to the 53-man limit, which the Texans did. It was a sad day for a lot of talented young men, and hopefully for most of them it isn’t the end of their pro football journey.

Houston Texans commit to young receivers, cut Cecil Shorts III – by Sarah Barshop, ESPN Staff Writer

Most significant move: The Texans cut 28-year-old receiver Cecil Shorts III and kept five young receivers instead. Shorts took a pay cut in the offseason, restructuring his contract to stay in Houston. Shorts said on Thursday after the Texans’ 28-17 preseason victory against the Cowboys, that at this point in his career, there’s no worrying. “You work your butt off and whatever happens, happens,” Shorts said. The Texans’ receiving group is now Pro Bowl receiver DeAndre Hopkins, 2015 draft picks Jaelen Strong and Keith Mumphery and rookies Will Fuller and Braxton Miller.

The Houston Texans went up to Dallas on Thursday night and for Keith Mumphery the 28-17 win might have just secured the second-year wide out’s spot on the roster. But while Mumphery’s game was solid, he won the heart of the Internet with his expression that was captured during his 64-yard touchdown catch and run.

Strengths: If 2015 Defensive Player of Year J.J. Watt returns to form after back surgery in July, Houston’s defense will continue to be team’s strength. He didn’t play in preseason, but should be back for season opener, when he’ll pair with 2014 top overall pick Jadeveon Clowney to provide potent pass rush. Texans are looking for breakout season from Clowney, who shined this preseason after failing to produce in first two injury-plagued years.
