Giants lose rookie safety Mykkele Thompson to torn Achilles tendon

In his preseason and professional debut, New York Giants rookie safety Mykkele Thompson tore his Achilles tendon. Thompson had been working in with the Giants' first-team defense at safety at times, but mostly with the second-team defense. Coaches were excited about how quickly he picked up the defensive scheme.

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin confirmed the news on Saturday, following the first preseason game.

"Feel really badly for that young guy," Coughlin said to reporters, per Jordan Raanan of True Jersey. "His season is over."

The Giants are very thin in the secondary after losing several key members during the preseason opener.
