Former first-round tackle Sherrod could be of use to the Chiefs
Derek Sherrod was considered to be one of the top tackles in his draft class.
That was only four years ago. And despite a precipitous drop-off that led his original team, the Green Bay Packers, to let him go, the former first-rounder might still be of use to his new team in Kansas City.
The Mississippi State product couldn't find a home with the Packers because of injuries. Arrowhead Addict, a Chiefs blog, speculates he'll have to Sherrod will have to prove his availability is his best ability first.
The silver lining? He's got an ally in former Packers-turned-Chiefs front office man John Dorsey.
Arrowhead Addict blogger Ben Helmquist writes:
"Sherrod is a former first round pick from (Chiefs general manager) John Dorsey’s time with the Packers. That means there is a bit of familiarity there that can help out in a tight competition. On the field, Sherrod demonstrated some quality traits as an offensive tackle prior to getting injured. It seemed like he had found a home at right tackle. For some players, circumstances just play out to where you lose a job through no real fault of your own."
Kansas City's offensive line wasn't anything to write home about last season. If Dorsey can find treasure in his former team's trash, it'll be a truly great find and an even better redemption story.
