Evan Mathis absent as Eagles begin workouts

Published Apr. 21, 2015 12:50 p.m. ET

For the second offseason in a row, Evan Mathis entered the end of April unsatisfied with his contract situation and squarely on the trade block. However, this time around, he decided to skip out on the team's initial voluntary offseason workout program. Although these workouts are voluntary, Mathis was in attendance last year.

Monday was only the first day of these workouts, but an NFL source tells Philly.com that Mathis isn't expected to participate any time soon.

The tension first started when Mathis approached the Eagles about a new contract back in February. Mathis is slated to make $5.5 million in base salary this season after signing a five-year, $25.5 million contract in March 2012. After playing out three seasons under that deal, Mathis feels it is time they restructure the deal to better represent his play on the field. The team feels differently, and they granted his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, permission to seek a trade.

According to game charting and analytics website Pro Football Focus, Mathis might have a point. Despite missing six games in 2014, Mathis graded out as Pro Football Focus' second-best offense guard overall. From 2011-2013, he finished as Pro Football Focus' best overall guard in each of the three seasons.

We may not get a meaningful update on his status with the team until June 16th when every player under contract is required to attend the Eagles' mandatory three-day minicamp.
