Ereck Flowers keeps focus on football amidst new opportunity

It's never easy for a rookie to transition to the NFL life, but being drafted into one of the league's biggest markets makes things even more difficult. When the Giants drafted University of Miami offensive tackle Ereck Flowers with the No. 9 overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft, expectations rose dramatically for the prospect who had never been to New York City before now.

Despite the change of scenery, Flowers remains focused on sticking to the mindset that got him here. In fact, he doesn't think the transition from the University of Miami to the New York Giants will be that daunting.

"Miami is a pretty big city," Flowers told reporters on Saturday. "Same thing, just focus on football. Clock in and clock out. Get the job done."

Flowers was said to have a mean streak in his play at Miami that stood out to scouts. This physical nature of play is exactly what has defined some of the best Giants offensive lines over the franchise's history.

When asked about his mean streak, Flowers simply added, "it is just who I am, it is just how I play."

Flowers' mean streak is most apparent in the running game, and this is unsurprisingly Flowers' favorite aspect of his own game.

"I love run blocking. That has dated back to high school. My running back from college went to the same high school as me. Mostly what we did was run the ball. Opening the holes, watching the [running back] get through and running the ball wins games. [I enjoy] everything about it."

Flowers is still a bit raw in pass protection, but at least he knows exactly where he needs to shift his focus going forward. He mentioned his hand placement as the aspect of his technique that he will first work on this summer.

The Giants certainly hope that Flowers can step in immediately at right tackle. This move would allow them to kick Justin Pugh inside to right guard. The Giants would be improving two positions in one move.
