Edwards' TD gives Jets lead after three quarters
Braylon Edwards caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Mark Sanchez with 44 seconds left in the second quarter before Sanchez left in the third with a right knee injury, and the New York Jets led the Buffalo Bills 16-10 after three quarters on Thursday night. Sanchez was escorted to the locker room early in the third quarter after hurting his right knee on an 8-yard scramble that gave the Jets a first down. He remained in the game for two more plays before being replaced by Kellen Clemens. Sanchez connected on 7 of 15 passes for 104 yards before departing. Late in the second quarter, Edwards was originally ruled down at the Buffalo 1 on his catch, but was awarded the touchdown after the play was reviewed. The score capped an 86-yard drive keyed by a 45-yard completion to Jerricho Cotchery down the right side of the field. Thomas Jones had 71 yards rushing on 16 carries, and Shonn Greene added 52 yards on the ground through three quarters. After New York's Jay Feely hit a 49-yard field goal early in the second, Buffalo responded on the next possession. Marshawn Lynch scampered in from 15 yards to give the Bills a 10-6 lead with 10:25 to go. Lynch also had a 35-yard run on the drive. Feely's field goal was set up when Jets linebacker David Harris stripped the ball away from quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Bryan Thomas recovered it at the Bills 36. Feely kicked three field goals in the half, and Jones topped the 1,000-yard mark for the fifth straight season on a 12-yard gain midway through the second quarter. The Bills picked up where they left off Sunday when they scored 24 unanswered points in the fourth quarter in their win over Miami, scoring on their opening drive against New York on Thursday night when Rian Lindell booted a 49-yard field goal. On that drive, Fitzpatrick beat the Jets blitz and hit Lee Evans down the right side for a 38-yard gain to help set up the field goal. The Jets countered with Feely's 38-yard kick with 3:39 remaining. New York drove to the Buffalo 11, but the drive stalled after Sanchez was sacked by Kyle Williams for a 9-yard loss on third down. Sanchez missed a wide-open Cotchery in the end zone when he badly overthrew the receiver on the previous play. The Jets missed an opportunity late in the quarter to take the lead, but Sanchez's pass on a deep route went off the fingertips of a wide-open Edwards at the Bills 30. Edwards beat cornerback Reggie Corner on the play, and had a sure touchdown had he held onto the ball. This is the third of eight Bills games that will be held in Toronto during a five-year period through 2012, and the second regular-season game. Buffalo lost to Miami 16-3 last year. The Bills are looking to sweep the season series with the Jets for the first time since 2007.
