Denver Broncos: offensive guard Billy Turner claimed off of waivers

The Denver Broncos made a roster move on Monday, claiming offensive lineman Billy Turner off of waivers from the Baltimore Ravens…

The Denver Broncos are seeking upgrades on the offensive line, and their latest attempt has come in the form of guard Billy Turner, most recently waived by the Baltimore Ravens.

Turner was a third round selection by the Miami Dolphins out of North Dakota State in the 2014 NFL Draft. He was a 12-game starter for the Dolphins last season and was pressed into duty this season at left tackle after injuries to both Branden Albert and Laremy Tunsil.

He did not do well.

Turner was waived by the Dolphins following a miserable performance by the entire Miami offensive line against the Tennessee Titans. He was quickly claimed by Ozzie Newsome and the Baltimore Ravens, and when the Ravens became healthier up front, the odd man out was the last guy hired: Turner.

The Broncos claimed Turner the second time he hit waivers, which means there’s a decent chance they claimed him the first time around as well. It’s not necessarily a move to acquire a starter by the Broncos, but it could be depending on how quickly Turner acclimates himself to the new offense.

Turner has potential in this league, no question about it. Adam Gase and the staff in Miami didn’t draft him in 2014, so perhaps he wasn’t a very good fit for their scheme and needed a change of scenery. The Broncos now have two former third round picks from the class of 2014 on the interior of their offensive line, as Turner joins starter Michael Schofield.

This might not be the last move the Broncos make up front in the coming weeks. Their main weakness offensively starts up front, after two games to start the season were apparently a mirage.

Darrion Weems, a player who was with the starting unit at one point, was cut in order to make room for Turner on the roster.

The addition of Turner is an exciting one just for the fact that Denver is getting a player that was once a highly regarded prospect coming out of a small school, who is now playing on a very good team in a very favorable offense for linemen with quickness and aggressive style of play.

I think there’s at least a good amount of upside here, making this a risk worth taking.
