Denver Broncos get starting QB back

Rumors are rumors, but at this point is looks like there is a very strong chance that starting quarterback Trevor Siemian will be returning to the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

The Tennessee Titans were probably hoping for Paxton Lynch to get another crack at the starting job given just how slowly he seems to be taking to the offense. Still, for the season the Denver Broncos haven’t exactly been an offensive powerhouse.

In fact, the Denver Broncos have been the reverse Tennessee Titans in a way. Over their first four games of the season they had their first (and only) outing where they topped 30 points. During that time, they averaged 27.75 points.

To contrast, over the last four weeks they have averaged just 23 points a game. 3.75 points may not seem like a lot, but it is a full possession lost, and they have done it against some very unimpressive teams including the New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars.

This is a negative on the surface for the Tennessee Titans, but it isn’t all bad. With the foot injury that Siemian sustained, the biggest concern was his mobility. Of course there is going to be issues with planting his feet and throwing, but mobility may be more important for the Titans.

It hasn’t been talked about a lot, but the Broncos running game hasn’t been great and it took another hit last week with their big play threat Kapri Bibbs getting injured. While they added Justin Forsett, he shouldn’t be a big threat to the Titans (though they have made some pretty bad RBs look great in the past).

On top of that, they have allowed 33 sacks between Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch combined. That is good for fourth worst in the NFL.

With revolving doors at offensive tackle, an aggressive defensive coordinator should be able to take advantage of his lack of mobility and force him to roll one way or another in the hopes of either landing a sack or an errant pass to a trap zone.

The Tennessee Titans can’t be passive this week. For this team it is playoff football, likely needing to win 3 of the next 4 to have a very solid chance at winning this division. Marcus Mariota can’t carry this team against two of the more elite defenses in the NFL, so it is time to see exactly what Dick LeBeau has up his sleeves.

I expect a heavy dose of the running game, including a potential breakout 14-days for Derrick Henry who should be more heavily involved than he has been all year. However, this team needs a defensive stand to convince fans, opponents and even their own players that this team doesn’t go rely on Marcus Mariota 100% of the time.

Again, it is time for Dick LeBeau to really show people that he still has it and that he can cover up for a bad secondary with great schemes and blitzes. If not, the Titans shouldn’t convince themselves that he is necessarily the answer for them in 2017
