Dak Prescott: Should The Cowboys bench him for Tony Romo?
Is it time to bench rookie quarterback Dak Prescott and bring the veteran back up in Tony Romo off the bench to save the Dallas Cowboys season?
Sitting at 11-2, the Dallas Cowboys currently have one of the best records in the NFL, tied with only the New England Patriots. But after falling in a close 10-7 game to the New York Giants, the talk around town about should be the starting quarterback of America’s Yeam has started up again in Dallas. Should rookie quarterback Dak Prescott continue at the helm or should the Cowboys bring in veteran back-up Tony Romo to finish out the season?
It’s no secret that Prescott has been having a great rookie season. The 23-year old stepped up to lead the Cowboys when Romo got injured in Dallas’ third preseason game. And Dak’s played in some big moments without looking like the rookie he is. Prescott is poised on the field and proven that he can make plays.
The former Mississippi State Bulldog has 20 touchdown passes and four interceptions on the season (2 of those picks coming in Sunday night’s game against the Giants). In that matchup, Prescott completed 17 of 37 passes for 165 yards. He also had one fumble on the day.
Prescott struggled to connect with veteran wide receiver Dez Bryant despite targeting him nine times. But that’s just one game. I don’t think it’s time to call it quits on the first-year quarterback or to say that Prescott has hit the rookie wall. Despite going three games without 200+ passing yards, or failing to convert on third downs, I don’t think benching Dak is the answer.
Prescott has completed 65.8 percent of his passes and rushed for another 218 yards and five scores this season. For some reason, he just struggles to produce against the Giants, a team who the Cowboys need him to be able to play well against.
If you look at it from that stand point, bringing Romo off the bench makes sense. He’s 11-9 all-time against the Giants. And Tony’s won the last five matchups and six of the last seven. Against the Giants, Romo’s completed 67.5 percent of passes for 386 completions, 4,639 yards and 41 scores. He’s thrown a total of 21 interceptions.
So yes, if we base it off the close 10-7 loss to the Giants, maybe it’s time for a change. Or the fact that the only two losses on the season come from a division rival, it would make sense to bring in Romo to finish out the season. But looking beyond that, Prescott got the Cowboys to 11 wins this year. He deserves a shot to stay as the starting quarterback; one bad game shouldn’t change everything.
