Cowboys rehash infamous final series of Week 1 and get different result
Can the Dallas Cowboys have a do-over? No, the NFL won't let them get a second chance to re-run that final play against the Giants in which wide receiver Terrance Williams failed to get out of bounds, leaving Dallas no time to attempt a 62-yard field goal in its 20-19 loss.
But that doesn't mean the Cowboys can't use the blunder as a teaching moment, which is exactly what they did Thursday in practice.
Head coach Jason Garrett changed the scoreboards to 20-19 with 1:05 to go in the fourth quarter and gave the offense the ball at the 20, the same situation Dallas was facing on its final drive Sunday.
But this time, the Cowboys did what they failed to do Sunday: get into field-goal range.
"We went back through that phase again, and we executed it," wide receiver Dez Bryant said, via the Star-Telegram. "Even though it's not in a game, it's in practice; it's just a learning tool."
According to the Star-Telegram, Williams didn't get the ball this time and though the team got into field-goal range, kicker Dan Bailey didn't attempt the kick because he doesn't kick on Thursdays.
"Just work that situation again," offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said. "I'm going to stick up for Terrance. He's literally thinking how he's got to get out of bounds. He just got caught. He's trying to get close enough to get Dan Bailey to a real field goal. He felt like if he ran straight out it'd have been so far. And so he was trying to do the right thing. Trust me. We just kind of talked through that situation again. Guys were tuned in. We worked a nice little drill there. We're working hard to rectify things that aren't good enough and move forward."
