Colts put Collins on injured reserve

Kerry Collins came to Indianapolis to win a Super Bowl ring.

He may leave town without a win.

Two months after signing with the Colts, the 17-year veteran was placed on injured reserve with a concussion - a move that will definitely end his season, and possibly his NFL career.

It's been a strange year for Collins, who announced in July he was retiring, then was wooed out of retirement with a $4 million deal to be Manning's backup.

But when Manning had another neck surgery in early September, Collins was suddenly promoted to starter. And now, with Manning still not expected back at practice before December, it's Collins - not Manning - who is on injured reserve.

''I have no idea what that prognosis might be, and I have no idea when a decision may be forthcoming,'' team vice chairman Bill Polian told radio listeners Monday night. ''I guess they may make a decision at some point, but concussions are a hot-button issue as you know and it's one (decision) that has to be made internally.''

Less than 24 hours later, the decision was made.

Collins started three games for the Colts, getting knocked out in the third quarter against Pittsburgh. He hasn't played a down since and has been limited to light individual work at practice since then.

With the Colts, Collins was 48 of 98 for 481 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He has now thrown for 40,922 career yards, 10th in NFL history after passing Joe Montana in Week 1. In 198 career games, Collins was 3,487 of 6,261 with 208 TDs and 196 interceptions.

That leaves Indy with three quarterbacks on the active roster - Curtis Painter, who took over as the starter when Collins was injured; Manning, the four-time league MVP; and veteran backup Dan Orlovsky, who recently re-signed with Indy after getting cut by the Colts at the end of training camp.

Indy also placed fullback Chris Gronkowski on injured reserve and re-signed offensive linemen Jamey Richard and Michael Toudouze and running back Darren Evans to the active roster.

Evans is an undrafted rookie who has been on the Colts' practice squad or active roster all season. Richard was Indy's seventh-round pick in 2008, and Toudouze was the Colts' fifth-round choice in 2006.

Indy also waived David Gilreath from the practice squad and announced starting guard Joe Reitz had arthroscopic surgery on his injured knee and will be out indefinitely.
