Chiefs QB Alex Smith does not feel worthy around Eric Berry

BY foxsports • August 3, 2015

Alex Smith sat next to his cancer-beating teammate as he fielded questions from reporters.

Even the Chiefs quarterback feels small in the presence of Eric Berry, who's back on the field after eight months of treatment.

“To be honest, I really felt like I didn’t deserve to be in the room,” Smith told the Kansas City Star. “That’s the truth. I felt like I was undeserving to be in there with him, talking about that."

Smith will probably be a Chiefs captain. There's no denying who the team's emotional leader will be, though, after a rollercoaster ride like this.

The Chiefs are taking it slow with No. 29. He took reps with the second-team defense over the weekend.

Smith is in awe of Eric Berry nonetheless.

“He’s a special person, a special teammate, the way he’s handled everything," Smith said. "To see him come out of this, I’m so incredibly happy for him. I felt really humbled.”
