Chargers TE Gates active for Jets game

Published Oct. 23, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates is active and will play against the New York Jets on Sunday after missing three games with a flare-up of plantar fasciitis in his right foot.

Gates tore scar tissue near the injury Sept. 18 against New England, and will be available for Philip Rivers to throw to for the first time in over a month. He had been listed as questionable. Gates has eight catches for 74 yards this season.

Jets center Nick Mangold (ankle) was active and starting, as expected, but defensive end Mike DeVito was out with a knee injury suffered in practice earlier in the week. Rookie Kenrick Ellis, who made his NFL debut Monday night, was starting in DeVito's place.
