Chargers tackle D.J. Fluker losing weight to improve his speed
The Chargers have a tackle who can drop oncoming defenders like a sack of potatoes.
But in order to remain at that position, D.J. Fluker must first drop some weight.
The Bolts' big lineman has trimmed down to 345 pounds and is eying even more weight loss, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
That would help stave off rumors that because of his size, he's better suited to guard.
"It's really based on my weight," he said. "I'm hypothetically speaking, but if I was heavier when I came in or something like that, maybe I would be playing guard. They probably would have drafted a guy."
Fluker's girth did him no favors last season. He suffered from a variety of lower body ailments that caused what he calls a "sophomore funk."
His coaches wanted him to shed some pounds in order to stay healthy throughout 2015. Fluker agreed.
"As the coaches told me, just lose the weight," said Fluker. "Get it off of me. Learn how to maintain it."
So, he's been flying back and forth between Georgia and Alabama on a wild workout regimen to reduce that weight.
The man once known for his legendary dietary intake has set a goal to play at around 330 pounds by training camp. That'd equal a 23-pound loss from his playing weight of 353 during the 2014 season.
