CB Owens misses Falcons practice with concussion

Published Sep. 19, 2012 11:55 p.m. ET

Atlanta Falcons cornerback Christopher Owens did not practice Wednesday because of a concussion.

Owens was injured in the first quarter of Atlanta's 27-21 victory over Denver on Monday night, further depleting a secondary that already lost cornerback Brent Grimes with a season-ending injury in Week 1. Dominique Franks has moved up to take the nickel back spot.

Antone Smith, a backup running back and special teams player, also skipped practice because of a hamstring injury.

Receivers Julio Jones and Roddy White, linebackers Stephen Nicholas and Sean Weatherspoon, defensive end John Abraham and offensive tackle Tyson Clabo had limited participation because of minor ailments. But coach Mike Smith said he was mainly trying to keep them fresh during a short week.
