Browns offered Rams trade for No. 1

Published Apr. 24, 2010 9:31 p.m. ET

The Cleveland Browns made one last-ditch effort to pry the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft away from the St. Louis Rams with a trade.

Browns president Mike Holmgren says he made a phone call to the Rams 20 minutes before the draft began on Thursday and offered a package to the Rams, who selected Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford first overall. Holmgren says he made the offer to Rams general manager Billy Devaney ``at the limits of what I was willing to do.''

Holmgren says Devaney ``finally said we're going to take him (Bradford).

Holmgren would not specify what he offered the Rams. The Browns eventually selected Texas quarterback Colt McCoy in the third round.
