Bills promote cornerback Ryan Lewis off practice squad

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Bills have signed cornerback Ryan Lewis off their practice squad to address a position depleted after Vontae Davis abruptly left the team last weekend.

The Bills initially claimed Lewis off waivers on Sept. 2 after he spent last season on the New England Patriots practice squad. The Bills cut Lewis on Sept. 12 before re-signing him to their practice squad a day later.

Davis quit the Bills during halftime of their 31-20 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, and then announced he was retiring a few hours later.

Injuries have also affected the position with the uncertain status of Phillip Gaines and Taron Johnson for Buffalo's game at Minnesota on Sunday. Gaines dislocated his left elbow against the Chargers, while Gaines has missed one game with a shoulder injury.

The Bills also signed cornerback Michael Hunter and receiver Hunter Sharp to their practice squad.
