Bills' McKelvin on taking pay cut: 'I have a lot of money in the bank'
The Buffalo Bills have two outstanding cornerbacks in the secondary in Ronald Darby and Stephon Gilmore. They consistently shut down opposing wide receivers before Gilmore got injured, but they're expected to team up once again in 2016.
With that said, the odd man out could be veteran corner Leodis McKelvin. His cap hit in 2016 is set to be $4.9 million, which is more than Darby, who's taken over as the starter and played extremely well. That almost makes McKelvin expendable, but he's not ready to leave Buffalo just yet -- even if that means taking a pay cut.
“For me personally, my goal is to stay here and get this team to the playoffs," McKelvin said via Tyler Dunne of the Buffalo News. "No matter how many years it takes, that’s my goal.”
McKelvin was asked if he'd be willing to take a pay cut to stay with the Bills, to which he said with a grin:
“I have a lot of money in the bank.”
The Bills defense has underperformed greatly in Rex Ryan's first season, with McKelvin being a part of those struggles. He missed most of the season as he was recovering from an ankle injury and didn't appear to be himself upon returning. The Bills have a big decision to make regarding his contract, but there seems to be little doubt he wants to be back in Buffalo.
