Barkley, Bryant, Butler among 22 players cut by Cardinals
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Quarterback Matt Barkley and eight-year NFL defensive lineman Red Bryant were among the 22 players cut by the Arizona Cardinals to reach the league's 53-man limit.
The team also released linebacker Donald Butler, who started 62 games in five seasons with San Diego; wide receiver Brittan Golden, who appeared in 15 games with the Cardinals lasts season; and safety Chris Clemons, who was working as backup to Deone Bucannon at the ''dollar'' linebacker position.
Barkley, the former USC standout acquired in a trade with Philadelphia last season, struggled in the preseason before a strong showing in the final game. The move leaves the Cardinals with two quarterbacks, Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton, but they will probably pick up another on the practice squad.
Bryant spent seven seasons with Seattle and was a member of the Seahawks' Super Bowl championship for the 2013 season. He was signed by the injury-depleted Cardinals on Nov. 26 and played in six games.
Also cut from the squad was linebacker Shaq Riddick, a fifth-round draft pick last season.
The roster is subject to change in the next few days as the Cardinals eye players who were released by other teams. Coach Bruce Arians said he always tells those at the end of the roster to ''don't celebrate too much.''
Others released were center Taylor Boggs, cornerback Cariel Brooks, wide receiver Marquis Bundy, tackle Rob Crisp, safety Matthias Farley, cornerback Trevor Hartfield, wide receiver Chris Hubert, guard Antoine McClain, cornerback Harlan Miller, tight end Ifeanyi Moma, running back Elijhaa Penny, tackle Givens Price, wide receiver Jaxon Shipley, tight end Hakeen Valles, running back Kerwynn Williams and cornerback Ronald Zimort.
In addition, Arizona waived/injured linebacker Tristan Okpalaugo.
