Back healthy, Seahawks CB Lane to vie with Shead for starting job

The Seattle Seahawks could be changing starting cornerbacks for the third time in five weeks.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told reporters on Monday that DeShawn Shead and Jeremy Lane will compete for the starting job opposite Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman for Sunday's matchup against the St. Louis Rams.

Seattle, which has allowed 13 points or fewer four times during its current five-game winning streak, figures to be in good shape no matter which player wins the competition.

Shead started the past three games after free-agent acquisition Cary Williams was benched in a Week 11 win versus San Francisco and subsequently waived, but he was hobbled by an ankle injury last weekend, giving Lane his first extended action since suffering multiple injuries in the Super Bowl.

“He did a good job, was very consistent in his coverage," Carroll said of Lane. "Looked quick, technique-wise was really solid. Stayed on top really well, covered guys throughout. ... Tackling could be a little bit better, but all in all he did a very good job for us.”

Lane suffered a gruesome broken arm and a torn ligament during an interception return in the Super Bowl, forcing him to start the season on the physically unable to perform list. He didn't appear in a game until Nov. 29 but was on the field for all 55 defensive snaps Sunday against Cleveland.

"Usually with these guys that have an ACL, they’re better the next year," Carroll said. "They’re at their very best the next year and he looks fine, he doesn’t look to show any signs at all. Now that he’s had enough time, it’s like preseason is over for him so he’s ready to go.”
