Ameer Abdullah addresses ball-security concerns in rookie blog

Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah is exciting with the ball in his hands, but the rookie can also be wildly frustrating. Although he's as quick as lightning, Abdullah also has some issues with ball security.

Last week against the Arizona Cardinals (with starting running back Joique Bell out), Abdullah took a backseat to undrafted rookie Zach Zenner after fumbling twice. Both fumbles were recovered by the Cardinals, but one was recovered out of bounds so the Lions maintained possession.

Abdullah knows ball security can be a major concern for young running backs, so he addressed it in his rookie blog on the Lions' official website:

Ball security is something you’ve got to stay on top of. Sometimes as the season goes on, you kind of lose your physical mechanics and fundamentals that you go over every day in training camp. Sometimes those areas aren’t as sharp as they once were. So, you’ve got to go back to the drawing board and understand what’s most important — take care of the ball at the beginning of the play and do it throughout the duration of the play. Once you focus on that throughout the play, you’ll be fine.

In this league you can’t always make everyone miss. The one play in particular, I made a couple guys miss, but the pursuit is coming much quicker. Anytime you’re making someone miss, the ball is more exposed. You’ve got to be conscientious when you’re making the play.

Abdullah still has a bright future ahead of him, but NFL coaches won't trust him to run the ball if he can't hang onto it. We'll see how he rebounds from his early struggles.
