AFC West News: Chargers Expected to Exercise Los Angeles Option

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The San Diego Chargers are expected to exercise their option to move to Los Angeles.

It’s not surprising AFC West news in the slightest, but the San Diego Chargers are expected to bolt for Los Angeles by exercising their option to do so in January 2017.

The news comes via Jim Trotter of ESPN.

In November, the Chargers only received 43 percent approval on the Measure C initiative, which would finance a new stadium in San Diego via an increase in hotel taxes. So with a new venture in their current city not looking likely, it makes sense for the Chargers to head to Los Angeles. Otherwise the Raiders will.

The Chargers would be tenants in Stan Kroenke’s new stadium — which is expected to be ready for the 2019 season — and therefore do not have to foot any of the $2.6 billion deal. However, owner Dean Spanos and the franchise will have to pay a $650 million relocation fee over the course of 10 years. And they also will have to purchase land and build a practice facility.

This would leave the Raiders on the outside looking in, with Los Angeles off the table once and for all. But Mark Davis has been focused on the Las Vegas project for quite some time now. Depending on who you ask or who you believe, it remains to be seen how likely a move to Sin City actually is.

Davis will certainly apply for relocation in January, regardless of anything that happens with Oakland until then. Davis has been unwilling to negotiate with the city or with the Ronnie Lott group, who are trying to get an 11th hour deal done.
