49ers taking cautious approach with Bowman

NaVorro Bowman has looked quite strong throughout training camp.

Even though it has been more than a year-and-a-half since Bowman first tore the MCL and ACL in his left knee, the linebacker knows he's not quite 100 percent.

“Not yet,” Bowman told reporters. “But I'm satisfied with how much work I've put in, how far I've come, how fast I'm able to recover and cover guys. But there are still hurdles that I need to cross. I'm just going to keep working until I get there. But it's looking up for me.”

Don't expect the team to throw him into the mix right away when the 49ers take on the Texans on Saturday.

If anything, the coaching staff is taking a more cautious approach. Jim Tomsula would rather have him ready for the regular season more than anything.

It's logical thinking for the 49ers, particularly for someone like Bowman who could be asked to anchor a linebacking corps that lost a number of key pieces in the offseason.
