The San Francisco 49ers have signed free-agent cornerback William James to a one-year deal, bolstering their secondary.

James will begin his 10th NFL season after playing last year for the Detroit Lions, starting 14 of their 16 games and recording 58 tackles with two interceptions and a touchdown.

The 30-year-old James spent his first five seasons with the New York Giants, who selected him in the third round of the 2001 NFL draft. He then played two years for the Philadelphia Eagles and then one with the Jacksonville Jaguars before going to Detroit.
