SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) The San Francisco 49ers have chosen linebacker Eli Harold out of Virginia with their third-round draft pick.

Harold was picked at 79th overall on Friday night after the team took Samford safety Jaquiski Tartt at 46th in the second round.

San Francisco looked to add a linebacker in the draft following the surprising retirements of five-time All Pro linebacker Patrick Willis and then Chris Borland shortly thereafter this offseason following his impressive rookie season.

While Harold didn't have any contact with the 49ers leading up to the draft, he met with them at the NFL combine along with about 19 other teams in one night. ''That's what's so surprising,'' he says.

Harold is eager to meet 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks, who also attended Virginia.
