Wizards pick up team option on Otto Porter's contract

The Washington Wizards have unsurprisingly decided to pick up the fourth-year team option on Otto Porter's contract, per The Washington Post.

It's worth $7.7 million during the 2016-17 season, and even though Washington wants to keep their books as flexible as they can (Kevin Durant, remember?), this is far too great a bargain for any team to pass up.

Porter would make double that amount per year, at least, if he hypothetically hit the open market next July. He's a long, 6'9" wing who can rebound, cut into open space and shoot corner threes. And he's only 22 years old.

Washington will likely start Porter at small forward this season, and he'll also play some small-ball four beside Marcin Gortat.

The team had until Halloween to make the decision, but it was a foregone conclusion. The No. 3 pick in the 2013 draft, Porter enjoyed a breakthrough in the postseason last spring and projects as a key cog in the franchise’s core alongside John Wall and Bradley Beal. And $7.7 million for a young, versatile talent is a bargain in today’s bloated market.
