Will Dirk Nowitzki end up coming off the bench next season?

Published Jun. 22, 2015 2:47 p.m. ET

With Dirk Nowitzki turning 37 years old and entering his 18th NBA season, a move to the bench may be in the cards soon.

Although Nowitzki was still highly productive during the 2014-15 season for the Dallas Mavericks, his minutes per game dipped to 29.6 as he required a little more rest than usual.

That's all to be expected, and the Mavericks likely won't move Nowitzki to a sixth man role unless there is a clear-cut alternative to play in the starting lineup.

Here's Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News with more:

"One scenario that seems plausible in that case is that the Mavericks would have enough cap space to try to sign free-agent LaMarcus Aldridge and also re-sign center Tyson Chandler. Pairing them with Chandler Parsons would give the Mavericks a front line that would be competitive with anybody. And it would mean Nowitzki could begin his pursuit of the Sixth Man Award in 2015-16."
