Tim Duncan on LaMarcus Aldridge pursuit: 'Honestly, I was betting against us'
Once again, the San Antonio Spurs will enter a season as legitimate title contenders. Some might even call them the favorite.
This is arguably the most talented roster the five-time champions have ever constructed, but Tim Duncan knows it'll take more than skill to win it all. He also doubted San Antonio could bring in a player of LaMarcus Aldridge's caliber.
Here's what Duncan told the San Antonio Express-News' Dan McCarney:
It's pretty great to hear Duncan be so honest about his mindset during San Antonio's tense pursuit of a top-20 player. Aldridge changes the team's whole dynamic, but also props open their championship window a few more years, and may even extend Duncan's career.
When will the Spurs not be terrifying? The answer is never.
Along with the unexpected addition of David West, it marked the splashiest offseason the Spurs have ever had, one that left Duncan “floored.” “This is kind of the first time we’ve got a guy of (Aldridge’s) caliber,” he said. “Honestly, I was betting against us. ‘He’ll choose someone else.’ Right up to the end.” That, in turn, has ramped up exterior expectations higher than ever, with a franchise record in season ticket sales and a veritable horde at Monday’s media event.
