Stevens on Smart: 'He's got a chance to make a good jump'
Marcus Smart's summer has been an undeniable success so far. The second-year point guard led all scorers at the Utah Jazz Summer League, and is now imposing his will in Las Vegas.
Smart controls both ends of the floor with his hustle, but he's also knocking down outside shots and attacking the basket like never before. All the positive play has Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens excited about what's to come, per the Boston Herald:
“He’s got a chance to make a good jump, there’s no question about it. But he’s still got a lot of things that he can improve on...He impacts winning, which is a good thing, but he’s got to continue to do that. The one thing that he’s got to balance always is that competitive spirit that he has with not trying to hit the home run...You’d rather have that than a guy that doesn’t love the moment or is scared of the moment. He loves it and he’s not scared. He’s a tough dude.”
Smart averaged 24 points per game in Utah and scored 19 in his only game so far in Las Vegas. He's so far ahead of the competition that it's almost not worth playing him heavy minutes.
Smart has little to prove where he is, but still has a long way to go before he reaches his full potential.
That's exciting news for the Celtics.
