Stephen Curry comments on Kevin Durant, Warriors as 'villains'
In a recent interview, NBA star Stephen Curry talked about the notion of Kevin Durant and the Golden State Warriors being labeled the league’s “villains.”
Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry said he’s amused by the discussion that his team is now considered “villains.” The new label arrived after Kevin Durant signed with them. The signing came on the heels of LeBron James, previously considered a villain, winning his first NBA title since returning to Cleveland. It also comes on the heels of the Warriors coming back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat Durant and his former team in the Western Conference Finals.
According to ESPN, Curry said in the recent interview, “I kind of laugh at that.” He added, “All that narrative around our team, how people view us, doesn’t really matter to us. We are who we are and we’re championship contenders going forward.”
The narrative refers to the idea of LeBron as the hero and Durant as the new villain. According to some people, that makes the Warriors a villainous team.
Curry and the Warriors won the NBA championship two seasons ago. The next season it became tougher. They survived a tough Western Conference Finals against Kevin Durant’s former team but then fell to Cleveland in the Finals. From there, they were on the opposite side of fate against the Cavs in the Finals. Cleveland came back from down 3-1 to capture the NBA title.
Durant was the biggest free agent this past summer and his signing with “the competitors” shocked many people. The former NBA MVP and star of the Thunder will now team up with three Golden State All-Stars. Durant joins Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. They form a quartet that many call, “The Big Four.”
The Warriors are once again considered among top favorites to win it all in 2016-17. A series with the Cavs with both teams healthy could be quite telling. First, they’ll move through the season ahead.
Kevin Durant will likely receive a few boos here or there when the Warriors play road games this season. However, it’s hard to label the team as ‘villains’ for doing what all teams strive to do: win titles. The Golden State Warriors simply added more firepower to an already star-studded team in hopes of reclaiming that championship glory.
