Report: Vinny Del Negro linked to Pelicans' opening coaching position
With a talent like Anthony Davis in the fold, the New Orleans Pelicans should have their pick among the very best head coaching candidates across the basketball landscape. That's a good thing, obviously, but that kind of choice also means doing a lot of homework and making sure that a team does its due diligence.
The latest name to come up on the Pelicans' coaching search is former Los Angeles Clippers and Chicago Bulls head coach Vinny Del Negro, according to Yahoo! Sports/FOX Sports 1 NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, who reports that Del Negro has "discussed the New Orleans Pelicans coaching vacancy with general manager Dell Demps."
Del Negro has a career .533 win percentage across five seasons as a coach in the NBA, but his appeal as a coaching candidate to the Pelicans might be his work helping in the development of Blake Griffin. Del Negro was Griffin's coach for the All-Star's first three seasons in the league, and the coach helped steer the Clippers to two playoff appearances.
Prior to his time in Los Angeles, Del Negro coached the Bulls to consecutive 41-41 seasons during Derrick Rose's first two seasons in the league. Rose would go on to win the MVP the year after Del Negro's tenure with Chicago ended.
