Report: 'Only a matter of time' before Cavs re-sign Tristan Thompson, J.R. Smith

The Cavaliers have taken care of the bulk of their offseason signings. LeBron James and Kevin Love both re-upped as expected, and the team retained Iman Shumpert and Matthew Dellavedova, as well.

But two key members of last season's Eastern Conference champion squad remain unsigned.

Tristan Thompson is a restricted free agent, and considering the fact that he shares an agent with LeBron, his staying in Cleveland was assumed by many to be a foregone conclusion. J.R. Smith is a bit more of a wildcard, given his status as an unrestricted free agent. But most insiders expect him to return to the Cavaliers, too, once the team knows how much it will have to pay Thompson, and how much left it will have to spend on J.R.'s next deal.

A recent report from Joe Kotoch suggests that both players will be back in Cleveland next season.

"Spoke to a league source who says it's just a matter of time until the Cavs re-sign Tristan & JR & believes Cavs only keep 14 on the roster."

This is what has been expected all along, that the Cavaliers would bring all of their key players back for next season. Thompson and Smith certainly qualify, so expect their deals to get done in the not-too-distant future.
