Report: New Orleans interested in Van Gundy and Brooks
The Pelicans are still searching for a head coach to replace Monty Williams, who was surprisingly let go a few weeks ago. Several names have been associated with the job, including Tom Thibodeau, Alvin Gentry and John Calipari.
According to Yahoo Sports/FOX Sports 1 NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Pelicans have their eyes on two other candidates as well:
"New Orleans has also been making calls on former Houston Rockets and New York Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy, league sources said. New Orleans has an interest in former Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks too, sources said."
It makes sense for this team to scope out as many options as possible. Van Gundy has not coached in the NBA in nearly a decade, but his basketball mind is still sharp and he's well respected throughout the league.
In Oklahoma City, the recently fired Brooks molded Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Serge Ibaka into the star trio they are today. He has a track record of taking a young team and turning it into a contender, which is exactly what the Pelicans need.
But all in all, the two most talked about candidates, Thibodeau and Gentry, still seem like the two best fits. New Orleans can't afford to miss on this hire.
